ACTION ALERT: Special Election in Indiana on March 11
There's a great opportunity to pick-up a Congressional seat in a blue district in Hoosier Country but the Republican candidate urgently needs resources to get his message out.
The Congressional seat, Indiana's 7th, favors Democrats by a few points on paper but the Republican candidate, Jon Elrod, as reported by the Indianapolis Star, is known for his reputation "as a hard worker with a track record of winning elections in districts that favors Democrats."
Here are the top five reasons we could win this seat:
1. Republicans have nominated a good candidate in State Representative Jon Elrod.
To our knowledge, he was the only Republican State Representative to
defeat an incumbent Democrat in the Midwest during the disastrous 2006
cycle.
2. Indianapolis is seeing a Republican surge. Little-known Republican Greg Ballard defeated Democrat Mayor Peterson in the 2007 Election, despite being outspent 11 to 1.
3. The Dems are divided and Republicans are fired up for a win.
The caucus to select a candidate for the special election was
contentious. Democrats selected Julia Carson's grandson, Andre, by just
a few votes. Several opponents are challenging Carson to be the party’s
nominee for the general election. One of them, State Representative
David Orentlicher, has raised nearly $200,000 already for the effort.
4. The race is close. A Democratic poll
shows that despite running in a solid blue district, Carson is in a
statistical tie with Elrod: "With a margin of error rate of plus or
minus 4.9%, Carson edges Elrod by only three points, 41-38%"
5. Even the DCCC has recognized Carson is highly vulnerable. They
designated this 20% Kerry district as part of their Red to Blue Program
and are pumping thousands of dollars in to the race.
