Ronald Ernest Paul, Sr. (born August 20, 1935) is a 10th-term Republican United States Congressman from Lake Jackson, Texas, a physician, and a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2008 presidential election. He has represented Texas's 14th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1997 and represented Texas's 22nd district in 1976 and from 1979 to 1985. Paul also placed third in the 1988 U.S. presidential election as the nominee of the Libertarian Party, while remaining a registered Republican. After graduation from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1961 and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology, he was drafted and served as a flight surgeon during, but not in, the Vietnam War. Ron Paul has been called a conservative, a constitutionalist and a libertarian.
